Economical Christmas Decorating Idea

December 15, 2011

My sister told me about a clever idea she’d seen that I had to pass along: take one poinsettia and snip off the stalks near the base, strip any leaves that would be under water and stick in a small glass or bud vase. Instant, economical and unique seasonal decor! Picture a stand of these poinsettia sprigs gracing a tabletop. Add a few votive candles and Voila! Finally you can see over the centerpiece in order to see the guests!

We don’t sell poinsettias at Furniture Distributors, but we sure have a great selection of dining room furniture! Please consider us if you need a nice dining room suite on which to place your poinsettia bud vases! We have showrooms in Havelock, Greenville, New Bern and Morehead City, NC. You can also visit us on the web at www.furnituredistributors.net.

Feng Shui Decorating: Part III – Feng Shui Cures

December 13, 2011

Practitioners of Feng Shui believe that you can improve the ‘energy’ of your home by using the Bagua (see earlier post) to determine what energy forces should be placed in which part of the house. In addition, they believe that you can actually improve your life by using Feng Shui cures. In essence, by placing specific types of items in the proper direction of the home in the right quadrant of the home, you could, for example, improve your love life, your finances and more.

The five elements [fire, earth, metal, water and wood] each correspond to a specific direction:
Fire: south, northeast and southwest
Earth: northeast, southwest, center
Metal: west, northwest, north
Water: north, east, southeast
Wood: east, southeast, south

Let’s say you want to introduce a water fountain cure to your home. Ideally you would place it in the north, east or southwest room of your home, and if it has a direction (ie, it faces a particular direction rather than looking the same from all sides), you aim to face it north, east or southwest within that room.

Here’s a link to an excellent post on feng shui cures.

Feng Shui Decorating: Part II – Colors

December 9, 2011

Our next step in exploring the Feng Shui concept for home decorating is to determine appropriate colors.

In our last post, we determined the Bagua, or zones of our home. Each of these zones is associated with a Feng Shui element: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water or Wood.

Each of these elements has associated colors:
Fire: red, orange, pink, purple, bright yellows
Earth: light colored yellows, beige and tans
Metal: gray
Water: blue or black
Wood: brown or green

According to Feng Shui principles, you would choose your room colors based on the element indicated by your Bagua(see previous post).

Feng Shui for the Home: Part 1 – Define your Bagua

December 6, 2011

We are going to be exploring the Asian concept of Feng Shui as it applies to home decorating.  As we  learned previously, you begin by clearing out the clutter in your home.  Then you need to define your Bagua, or what I would call activity zones.

In the East, they use compass points to determine the Bagua.  Here in the West,. we typically use a simpler method which uses the front door of your home as the starting point.  Here is an excellent, easy to read article on defining your Bagua using the western method.

In future posts, we will continue to learn about Feng Shui. If you need a few home furnishing items to improve your Chi, please consider Furniture Distributors, with showrooms in Havelock, Greenville, Morehead City and New Bern, NC. Feng Shui Decorating: How to Start

November 18, 2011

To begin exploring adding Feng Shui principles to your home, you need to start clean. This means getting rid of clutter, which can lead to stuffed ‘chi’ or energy. Then you can establish your Bagua, or map of your home.

Bagua is like a road map of what type of elements should be in which part of the home. The home is divided into eight directional areas associated with it. Each has its own unique feng shui element(water, wood, earth or fire), feng shui colors, and ideally, a particular feng shui life activity associated with it.

For example, for the Northern direction, the element is water, the colors are blue and black, and the life area is Career or Life Purpose.

So for the best Chi, or energy, in your home, you would try to make your office on the north part of the home, add a water feature and use a color scheme incorporating blue and black.

This is the simple explanation. As we explore Feng Shui principals in more details, you can fine tune your home design.

Incorporating Feng Shui in Your Home Decor

November 16, 2011

I am so thrilled with my new water fountain (see last post for a super easy way to add a water feature to your home), that I thought I might explore the principles of Feng Shui.

Feng Shui home decorating, in a nutshell, means creating a happy positive environment in which to live. It means creating a home with light and energy. It does not mean it has to look Asian or ‘zen’. If you love country, you can still incorporate Feng Shui principles to make your home looks and feel its best.

We will be exploring various Feng Shui principles for the home in our upcoming posts.

If your home could use a little harmony and happy furniture, please consider visiting a Furniture Distributors showroom, with locations in Havelock, Greenville, New Bern and Morehead City, NC. You can also visit us on the web at www.furnituredistributors.net.

Add a Water Feature to Your Home – Easy!!!

November 14, 2011

I made a super easy home water fountain today that I wanted to share with you.

Simply find a waterproof vessel — I used a rectangular flower pot WITHOUT drainage holes. I put clear silicone caulk on the interior seams just to be safe, but this step may not be necessary. Just use your judgement.

After waiting until the caulk cured, I then I poured distilled water in the vessel (distilled prevents clogging and hard water marks) to within an inch of the top lip.

I bought an inexpensive tabletop fountain at my local box home center for well under $50, set it underneath the water with the fountain pointing up, on low, and then plugged in to a GFCI outlet.

On the low setting, the fountain gurgles nicely without splashing and adds a nice spa touch to my bonus room. Keep an eye on the water level and replenish as necessary as the water does evaporate over time. Don’t let the pump become exposed to air.

Furniture Distributors may not sell fountains or pots, but boy, if you need furniture to go with your fountain, please check out a Furniture Distributors showroom, with locations in Havelock, Greenville, Morehead City and Havelock, NC. You can also shop us from the convenience of your home at www.furnituredistributors.net.
